The Dominica Oral History (DOH) Project is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and disseminating the oral histories of Dominicans living on the island and in the diaspora. DOH is a Movement to tell our stories in our voices. We are the historians, storytellers, and preservers of Dominica's history, culture, and heritage. For too long, others have told our stories from their perspectives.
The mission of the Dominica Oral History Project is to
Oral history is the recording of individuals’ memories, perceptions, and life experiences in their own words. By using oral history, the past is preserved for future generations. Additionally, ordinary people who are not represented in the historical records and are not typically spotlighted can be heard.
On these pages, you will find interviews from civil servants, centurions, scientists, lawyers, politicians, athletes, business owners, musicians, librarians, journalists, doctors, farmers, homemakers, educators, and students, among others. We cherish the memories of those who have passed, and we remember to honor their contributions.
The interviews are in electronic transcript and audio form. In some cases, they do not precisely match because the transcripts have been edited slightly for better ease and comprehension. In some instances, there are video recordings of the interview.
Please note that the views expressed in the interviews as those of the individuals themselves and should not be seen as representative of those of the Dominica Oral History project.
